Attorney Profiles

Mr. Dowell was born and raised on the East Coast, in Northern Virginia. After graduation he headed west to the University of Washington in Seattle. There he was member of the National Championship rowing team while earning a degree in economics. Prior to beginning law school at Santa Clara University, Mr. Dowell worked as a treasury market analyst with a private bank in Seattle, and taught economics at The Gow School in Western New York, one of the world's preeminent boarding schools for boys with dyslexia.

Determined to make a home in a sunnier climate, Mr. Dowell moved to Silicon Valley in 2001, and was admitted to the California Bar in 2004. While at Santa Clara University School of Law, he focused is curriculum on corporate and tax classes, earning honors for his work in personal taxation. He began his career at McNamara, Dodge, Ney, Beatty, Slattery, Pfalzer and Borges in Walnut Creek working with firm's complex litigation team defending builders, as well as business and individual policy holders in a wide variety of cases.

Mr. Dowell also has experience litigating environmental cases, which he developed with Hirst & Chanler in Berkeley. While there, he negotiated California's first injunction requiring defendants to post hazardous chemical warnings in foreign languages under the state's Safe Drinking Water Act. He also worked closely with the Attorney General's Office in a series of litigations that resulted in the assessment in over $10 million in civil fines from the world's largest soda companies and the removal of lead from glass bottled sodas.

Mr. Dowell joined Willoughby, Stuart & Bening in 2008 and practices business litigation and insurance coverage, representing both policy holders and insures. He also works on construction related claims and corporate transactions.

Mr. Dowell lives in San Jose with his wife and son along with their two Labradors. When he's not in the office, he enjoys basketball and finding reasons to be golfing.
